Translation of 'Scheuren in de Toekomst', expected late 2025
Scientist, adventurer, and writer Christiaan Duif was never the same after working at Starlab NV/SA in Brussels. An environment so colourful, megalomaniacal, and inspiring, it simply had to be used as the setting for a book full of suspense.
Writing, he discovered, is a remarkable experiment: a way to explore to what extent one can capture fantasies and reality in words.
Summary:
When the brilliant hacker Dario disappears after a short holiday but continues to send encrypted pleas for help via email, his colleagues at the avant-garde research company Starlab in Brussels set out to find him themselves. Leading the effort is Peter Lauwer, driven primarily by guilt over the dubious tasks he had Dario carry out for his research. However, he soon realises that some colleagues have their own agendas and are keen to keep the truth hidden. Could the rumours about a secret invention at Starlab’s Barcelona branch be connected?
Adding to Peter’s confusion is the involvement of journalist Eline, who sets his heart racing but makes it clear she does not share his feelings. Eventually, they believe they have found Dario in the most unlikely of places. But as they attempt to rescue him, they find themselves caught in a grim struggle between a criminal organisation and a foreign intelligence agency.
Nicely and smoothly written, the story really came to life in my mind, just like the main characters.
